Whether you’re a new user or someone who just needs a refresher, this step-by-step guide will lead you right to what you need.
Signing in and Navigating VA.gov
To begin, ensure that you are signed in to VA.gov. You’ll know you’re successfully signed in when you see your first name displayed in the upper-right corner of the homepage. This is your starting point.
Once signed in, scroll down the homepage until you come across a section labeled “Records.”
Getting Your Records and Documents

After clicking on “Download VA Benefit Letters,” you’ll be directed to a page where you should choose “Get your VA benefit letters” under the heading “VA letters online.”
Review and Download Your Letter
You’ll then be taken to a page titled “VA letters and documents.” As part of Step One, verify that your full mailing address is correct. If it is, proceed by clicking on “View Letters.”
A list of VA letters and documents will now be available. Among the options, locate and select “Benefit Summary and Service Verification Letter.” This selection provides vital information, such as your branch of service, discharge status, and the start and end dates of your service.
Customize Your Benefits Letter
You have the flexibility to customize your benefits letter by checking or unchecking the lower boxes for details like your current monthly award, combined service rating, total and permanent disability status, and any service-connected disabilities. Once satisfied with your selections, click “Download Letter.”
Receive Your Completed Letter
Your personalized letter, complete with the official seal of the Department of Veterans Affairs, is now ready. It will include today’s date, your full name and address, and any requested information. This letter serves as your official benefits document.
